How Do I Find Out If I’m Pregnant?

If your period is late, your breasts are sore, and you feel exhausted, you may be pregnant. But other health issues can cause all those symptoms, so your best bet is to take a pregnancy test.

First Choice Pregnancy Center offers free and confidential pregnancy testing in our in-house lab that is overseen by a registered nurse. You can be confident you are taking the test correctly.

How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?

When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins producing a pregnancy hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The hormone builds rapidly in her system, eventually entering her blood and urine.

Our pregnancy tests detect hCG in a woman’s urine. Some healthcare providers use blood tests to detect hCG. It takes longer to get the results but offers a more detailed reading.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test?

Pregnancy tests should be accurate right around the first day after a missed period. If your monthly cycle is irregular or you don’t know when to expect it, try counting 17 days after you had sex. Waiting that length of time should give you a reasonably accurate test result.

I’ve Already Taken a Home Test. Isn’t That Enough?

Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are reliable but have different sensitivity levels. Experts suggest taking more than one test. Here’s why:

  • Your home pregnancy test is negative but your period doesn’t begin.
  • You’ve gotten mixed results when you’ve taken more than one test.
  • The test is negative, but you’ve taken it too early or at the wrong time of day.

Since our tests are free, you can conveniently test or retest without spending any more money.

What If My Pregnancy Test Comes Back Positive?

A pregnancy test is only an indication of the possibility of pregnancy. Although rare, it is possible to get a false-positive result (the test shows positive, but you aren’t actually pregnant).

A false-positive result can happen if you have an ectopic pregnancy (the pregnancy isn’t in the correct location) or you’ve already had a miscarriage. Your next step is to schedule an ultrasound which will confirm your pregnancy one way or the other.

We offer a free and confidential ultrasound after a positive pregnancy test from our center. Schedule an appointment today.
